About Brandon Voo
Cellist Brandon Voo graduated with a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the class of Nella Hunkins, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore in 2008. He furthered his musical education in chamber music playing at the 46th Summer Music Academy at the Académie de Musique Tibor Varga in Sion, Switzerland and alternative string playing at the New Directions Cello Festival 2013 at Ithaca College in the United States.
At age 11, Brandon joined the Singapore Youth Orchestra (SYO) and was an active member of the orchestra for 8 years. He was principal cellist with the SYO from 1996-1997 and performed Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1 in C Major with the orchestra in 1996. Brandon served his National Service with the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company (SAFMDC) and was also selected by the Asian Youth Orchestra in 2003.
Since 2013, Brandon has been a cellist with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (MFO). Performances with the MFO for the 2017-2019 season include: ‘Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour', 'Distant Worlds: Music From Final Fantasy -Jiritsu', and 'Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens'. In January 2018, he was appointed Principal Cellist of the MFO for the concert 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets In Concert'. In 2019, Brandon performed as part of the MFO in the Formula 1 Grand Prix Night Race Concert, sharing the stage with Hans Zimmer, Lebo M and Tina Guo. Other international artistes that Brandon has collaborated with include Sarah Brightman, Peter Cetera, David Foster, Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson.
In 2018, Brandon was invited to join re:SOUND, Singapore's only professional chamber orchestra for classical music and has collaborated with internationally renowned musicians such as the British Baroque violinist Pavlo Beznosiuk and Japanese cellist Yuko Miyagawa. Besides orchestral playing, Brandon has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. His solo recital ‘Asian Arpeggione and Romantic Rachmaninov’ at The Arts House and chamber recital ‘Schubert: The Piano Trios’ at the Esplanade Recital Studio were completely sold out.
Brandon teaches the cello at many award-winning schools in Singapore, having previously taught at the Catholic High School (Primary), German European School Singapore, Mandeville Music School, Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) and Raffles Institution. He is currently the cello tutor at Nanyang Girls' High School, Nanyang Primary School and Tanglin Trust School.
Having close to 20 years of teaching experience, Brandon is very much in demand as a private cello tutor amongst both Singaporeans as well as the expatriate community. Brandon and his cello students believe in giving back to the community through music making. He and his students performed together at the Sing50 concert held at the National Stadium in 2015 and also the 'Fight Cancer Charity Concert' organised by the Singapore Japanese Association in aid of the National Cancer Centre Research Fund in 2017.
