🎵 Singaporean educational system
Enriches portfolio for entry into secondary schools via the Direct School Admissions (DSA). The Core Curricular Activity (CCA) programme in many primary and secondary schools as well as junior colleges tends to include either a string ensemble (comprising of violins, violas, cellos and double basses) that performs Western music of various genres or a Chinese orchestra that plays music of various genres performed on mostly traditional Chinese instruments. As the cello is also now an indispensable part of the Chinese orchestra, cello students can opt to choose either the string ensemble or Chinese orchestra as their CCA, giving them more choices as compared to players of many other musical instruments. Outstanding cello students can also join the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (which performs mainly traditional Western classical music) or the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (which performs mainly traditional classical Chinese music), both which are under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. As a result of the very high level of participation in the music scene in Singapore, members of both national youth orchestras have the potential to receive the highest CCA points awarded. Cello playing can be used as a performance requirement for GCE 'O' and 'A' Level Music as well as the Music Elective Programme (MEP).
🎵 International school educational system
Music is an essential part of the curriculum and student life in many international schools. The cello can be seen as part of various musical ensembles across a wide variety of musical genres ranging from classical to pop, rock, jazz and world music. Cello performance can be used for students taking the IGCSE and IB music exams. Taking the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) music exams provides accreditation for entry into universities in the U.K and other Commonwealth countries and territories.
